Water Resources Legislation Amendment Bill 2006

The Water Resources Legislation Amendment Bill 2006 was introduced into Parliament on 17 May 2006 and is currently before the Legislative Council.

You can view the bill at the Parliamentary website.

When passed, the Bill will disband the Water and Rivers Commission by repealing the Water and Rivers Commission Act 1995. The statutory functions and powers of the Commission under various water Acts will be transferred to the Minster for Water Resources and administered by the Department of Water.

Other important elements of the Bill include:

  • Establishing a Water Resources Council to advise the Minister on water policy and planning. The Minister will appoint members with a diverse range of skills and experience relevant to water resources management.
  • New Ministerial powers, including a power to direct licensed water service providers to provide information to the Minister that is relevant to water resource management.
  • The continuation of licences to take water on the death of the licence holder.
