Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards (WELS) Scheme
Products that use water in the home are now sold with a 'star' rating similar to that used for energy products.
These products include dishwashers, washing machines, toilets, urinals, showers and taps.
Flow control devices are subject to voluntary rating and labelling.
The more 'stars' on the label, the more water efficient the product is.
There are interim provisions made for products imported and manufactured before 1 July 2006, including washing machines that may be sold unregistered and unlabelled until 31 December 2007.
A washing machine rebate is available for washing machines with a 4.5 star or higher efficiency rating. Customers who have purchased washing machines rated 4 stars on or before 31 December 2007, have until 31 March 2008 to claim the $150 rebate. From 1 January 2008, washing machines rated 4 stars are no longer eligible for a washing machine rebate.
Flow regulators rated 3 stars or better are available for the flow regulator rebate.
Registration of products and further information on the star rating scheme is at www.waterrating.gov.au
The scheme is administered and operated by the Federal Government. A Bill has been submitted to the WA State Parliament to allow the scheme to operate here.
