Print this page as a project information sheet Local area modelling projectAs part of the Gnangara Sustainability Strategy, the Department of Water is undertaking the following project: The projectThe Department of Water is developing sustainable water resource management strategies for the Perth Region. The Perth Region Aquifer Modelling System (PRAMS) has been developed in conjunction with the Water Corporation, CyMod Systems and the CSIRO. PRAMS has been used for:
PRAMS is a regional model and its calibration and resolution are based on a 500 x 500 metre grid size. It cannot provide detailed information for local scale management objectives, which require smaller grid sizes, higher resolution conceptual models and higher quality calibration. The Department of Water requires a local scale sub-regional model of the Gnangara Mound area, and local scale models (LAMs) around wetlands. The aim of developing these LAMs is to provide quantitative tools to assess land and water use impacts on the environment and groundwater systems. The models will provide sufficient resolution and reliability for assessing environmental, licensing and trading issues, with results that can be shown to be valid. What will the project achieve?
In order to set environmental criteria, the project will investigate four wetlands at a refined level (50 to 100 metre grid) of detail. These local area models will be used to refine and improve PRAMS so that the impact on wetlands due to changes in the superficial aquifer can be determined. Geographic - the project will provide local area models for the following important wetlands to be used in the ongoing management of the Gnangara groundwater system:
