Prescribed burning and water recharge project

As part of the Gnangara Sustainability Strategy, the Department of Environment and Conservation is undertaking the following project:

The project

Modification to the fire regime on Crown land is considered an effective option to increase groundwater recharge and reduce water stress on the native vegetation. Before this option can be implemented, the biodiversity consequences must be understood.

What will the project achieve?

This project will address knowledge gaps in the effects of modified fire regimes on:

  • the occurrence, distribution and conservation status of biodiversity values.
  • the functional processes that maintain mound ecosystems.
  • the increase in groundwater recharge on the mound.
