Managing Western Australia's water needs and ensuring that they are met, both now and in the future, is critical.
The economic, environmental and social well-being of future generations depends on the responsible decisions we make about the State's water needs today.
We provide comprehensive information to industry, expert technical support and professional guidance to government on the status of water and the viability of new source development.
Western Australia’s achievements in implementing the National Water Initiative – progress report has recently been released by the Department of Water. It highlights the significant progress the Department of Water and other government agencies have made in implementing the requirements of the National Water Initiative.
The Gnangara and Jandakot mounds will supply 147 GL to the Perth integrated water supply scheme (IWSS) in the next 12 months after the department's annual licensing decision for the Water Corporation.
The abstraction figure was set following assessment of dam storage, contingency sources, potential impacts and the demands of the IWSS.
For the 2008/09 year Water Corporation is licensed to abstract 137 GL from the Gnangara mound and 10 GL from the Jandakot mound.
The license figure is set annually after the water levels in the dams and mounds have reached a maximum.
The department’s October monitoring of groundwater levels showed the levels to be reasonably consistent over the past two years, with October 2008 average levels slightly higher than last year.
The department has set an abstraction target of 120 GL from Gnangara and Jandakot for the 2011/12 year.
This target will be reached when the second desalination plant comes on line in 2011/12.
